The Metropolitan Railway was the first line of the London Underground, opening on January 10, 1863, making it the oldest metro system in the world, its route now constituting for the most part the Hammersmith & City line. The current network has 11 lines and serves 270 stations (some of them closed) over nearly 402 kilometers.
